Hello, I'm Carissa Martin with Elevate Counseling and Community Services. I specialize (and love) working with folks in the LGBTQIA2S+ community, folks who are neurodivergent, and folks who are chronically ill and/or disabled. My mentality for practice is deeply informed by queer theory and strengths perspectives. I firmly believe in intersectionality as it relates to the therapeutic relationship, my clients' identities, and how my clients relate to their world. I also believe that while therapy cannot fix every problem, such as systemic oppression, I can provide support, a place for comradery, and help folks feel empowered with things that they can control. I have specialized knowledge and experience in working with folks with borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and mood disorders. I am trained in dialectical behavior therapy and am trauma-informed. I also have training with writing letters for gender-affirming surgeries. As a therapist, I want to be a guide in your life. I will support you and "teach you the rules of the road," so to speak, but you are ultimately in the "driver's seat." We will collaborate on your treatment goals to help you get where you want to be, and if you feel there is something important to focus on in a session, that will take precedence over what I have planned. I am eclectic in my approach and am willing to try different techniques to see what will work best for you!
